Description
I know this quality book on preaching is backed by years of hard work, unfailing courage, sheer determination, and high dedication. Craig Skinner's single volume covers more territory and makes more useful contributions than any other book on preaching I have read a long, long time. This Australian pastor-teacher unfolds and supports his main thesis-that good preaching always has been, is now, and ever must be strong in the teaching element. He discriminatingly surveys the whole field of relevant human endeavor (except that of public entertainment) for confirming materials. Drawing on the history of preaching, the history of education, the fields of ecclesiology, pastoral care, theology, psychology, public address, semantics, modern salesmanship, motivational research, evangelism, and homiletics. Craig Skinner comes up with exciting applications. No reader, however, must think that he is headed into an unorganized jumble or a mere rehash of stale ideas. Rather, this is a well-organized, creative, free-flowing, interest-sustaining, and highly profitable study. Like the author himself, the book breathes warmth, openness, evangelical concern, Biblical loyalty, and constructive purpose, all supported by sound scholarship. I have known this author both as a former graduate student and a friend. Only a mature person such as he is with broad training and varied experiences in both business and the ministry could produce writing like this. This book is a must for all preachers and theological students, who would find fresh inspiration to preach the Word and upgrade their pulpit performance. (Forward by Faris D. Whitesell)
