Description
With “The Signature Wines of Superior California,” Mike Dunne provides wine enthusiasts with a smart, swift and sweeping survey of the growing of grapes and the making of wine in the varied, spirited, historic - and under-appreciated - appellations about Sacramento, California’s capital.
Subtitled “50 Wines that Define the Sierra Foothills, the Delta, Yolo and Lodi,” the book tells with personality and authority the story of the region’s wine trade through 50 distinctive and accessible wines that speak to the area’s exceptional diversity, adaptation, persistence and character as a source of high-quality, high-value wine. This is a land and trade formed more by small family artisan wineries than by large corporations, and the area’s intimate, welcoming nature endures.
Much acclaim has been showered on the California wine enclaves just to the west of Sacramento – principally Napa Valley and Sonoma County – but well before those areas started to gain traction for their viticulture and enology, prospectors drawn to Gold Rush settlements to the east and south of Sacramento were cultivating wine grapes and producing wine.
As the gold played out, the Sacramento area’s vineyards withered and its wineries thinned out, not to be extensively revived until the 1970s, when Dunne picks up the story and traces the industry’s rebound through the creation of numerous American Viticultural Areas and scores of vineyards and wineries.
Dunne tracked that evolution mostly through The Sacramento Bee, starting as a Sierra-foothill correspondent for the newspaper’s Superior California section, then as food editor, restaurant critic and wine columnist. He also has covered the region’s wines for publications such as the San Francisco Chronicle and Wine Spectator, and he was a contributor to the books “Opus Vino” and “1000 Great Everyday Wines from the World’s Best Wineries.”
While the Gold Rush area historically has been most closely identified with the black grape Zinfandel and the robust red wines it yields, Mike Dunne's selection of wines that are redefining the region includes fresh and zesty Barberas, swashbuckling Syrahs, and teasing Picpoul Blancs.
As much as history, “Signature Wines of Superior California” is a stimulating and helpful guide that directs wine tourists to the most exciting wineries and wines in the Sierra Nevada foothills, the Sacramento/San Joaquin River Delta, Yolo County and Lodi.
