Description
"GRAND PRIZE WINNER, FICTION BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARDS," Independent Authors Network 2023 "OUTSTANDING HISTORICAL FICTION WINNER," Independent Authors Network 2023 "BRONZE WINNER," FOREWORD REVIEWS BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2022 It's 1971, and like many in his generation, J-Bee is haunted by the Vietnam War. His father is a U. S. Naval officer, and his best friend, Gilly, has enlisted to fight in Vietnam. J-Bee is expected to enroll at the U. S. Naval Academy but defies expectations by matriculating at Columbia University, an anti-war cauldron of counterculture. At Columbia, J-Bee is introduced to The Serpent, a campus coffeehouse sage, and becomes romantically entangled with the politically active Margo. He is emotionally torn over the war: he sees merit in Margo's rationale against the war but feels loyalty to Gilly fighting overseas. Meanwhile, Gilly returns stateside on furlough and visits J-Bee at Columbia. He has done horrifying things in Vietnam; he is emotionally damaged. Suffering PTSD, he brings murder into J-Bee's cloistered college world. Anti-war tensions now boil on campus. Bullhorns lead students in protest until 1000 riot police arrive in helmets, jackboots, battle shields, and nightsticks to surround 1000 vocal, protesting students. J-Bee is there, standing on the student fringe. As police charge the crowd, J-Bee, now in the midst of a riot, must make a choice that will define his life.
