Description
History, as the name implies, is a story, and history, at its best, is the most engaging and exhilarating story. As a story told about the past, the study of history contains meaningful insights about the present; insights that, if properly presented, should inspire students to make better choices in the future. Thus, the study of history holds a particularly important role in classical education, for history class offers the very best examples of human achievement for students to study and to help form their character for the better. Classical education takes students through the great books, so those great students can take on the whole world. We designedthe Thales Canon with this singular goal in mind. The Thales Canon is a history book designed for classical schools in Junior High. Volume I: The Bronze Age covers the very beginnings of history and includes chapters on historiography, Sumer, Egypt, Babylon, Assyria, Phoenicia, the Hittites, the Israelites, and the collapse of the Bronze Age circa 1177 BC. Each chapter contains the story of a great civilization, society, or hero, followed by reading comprehension questions, important vocabulary terms, primary sources, and exercises such as maps and timelines. Included in this text are primary source readings from Herodotus’ Histories, the Atrahasis Epic, the Code of Hammurabi, and various selections from the Old Testament.
