It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature. The readability of the dialogue and diction after over two centuries is indicative of Austen’s writing talent. Austen (1775-1817) was an English novelist known for her six major novels, although they were published anonymously and brought her only moderate success and little fame during her lifetime. Though considered a romantic novel set in the Regency era in England, it is full of satire regarding marriage and money. The novel follows the character Elizabeth Bennet, the protagonist of the book who learns about the repercussions of her hasty judgments (prejudice) and the character of Fitzwilliam Darcy, who appears excessively haughty and reserved (pride). The beautiful illustrations are from the artists C.E. Brock and Hugh Thomson. C.E. Brock (1870-1938) was a widely published English painter, line artist and book illustrator. Hugh Thomson (1860-1920) was an Irish illustrator best known for his pen-and-ink drawings of works by authors such as Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and J. M. Barrie. The editing was grammatical in nature and in no way compromised the original work of Jane Austen’s classic. By far, the most common edits involved the use of commas. The drift of the language in over two centuries is perhaps inevitable.
