Description
In a voice that is strong, kind, and full of faith, Shirley Robideau shares her remarkable story of a life filled with a multitude of challenges and her responses to them that were marked by determination, resilience and love. Born in rural North Dakota in 1947 on the heels of World War II, her early beginnings were promising and supported by humble, hard-working parents. Then, the Polio Epidemic of 1948 struck, and at age two Shirley was diagnosed with polio and given a grim prognosis—she would be paralyzed from the neck down. Confined to a children’s hospital for the next year, Shirley faced an uncertain future and the challenge of a life marked by disabilities. With an uncommon determination and loving support, Shirley navigated the ups and downs of polio and sensory difficulties in childhood and beyond. Holding to the Iron Rod is her warm and faith-filled account of hardship, growth, resilience, and family ties. Polio, tornadoes, personal trauma, death of a child, car accidents, divorce, blindness—all of these challenges and many more have accompanied Shirley on her life journey. And yet, there is much more—inspiring incidents of faith, sacred miracles, moments of love and service received, heavenly inspiration, and a rich network of family members and friends who have been traveling companions on life’s journey with Shirley. It is a most remarkable story, not the least of which is her religious conversion and her journey of marital companionship with the love of her life, Charles. From the perspective of nearly eight decades of living, including adjustment to sensory losses including blindness and hearing loss, it is Shirley’s hope that in reading her story you might laugh a little bit, learn much, and come away with the recognition that though life can be hard, we are not alone. God has a hand in our stories. He has certainly had a hand in her life story. Humorous, warm-hearted, and poignant, Holding to the Iron Rod highlights the depth of the human experience and honors the possibilities that can emerge in putting one’s hand into the hand of God.
