Description
What began as the vision of a passionate middle school social studies teacher has evolved into a nationally and internationally acclaimed institution dedicated to preserving and sharing the untold stories of Black history. Over the past three decades, the Black History 101 Mobile Museum has traveled across the country, showcasing a carefully curated selection of artifacts from its expansive archive. This commemorative book, A Legacy in Motion, features 101 of these artifacts, each one personally collected by founder Dr. Khalid el-Hakim. These items—ranging from signed documents to rare photographs—tell compelling stories of Black resilience, innovation, and cultural influence, creating an intimate connection to the narratives that shape our shared history. The museum’s journey has been enriched by the contributions of iconic voices such as The Last Poets, Professor Griff of Public Enemy, Dr. Khalilah Camacho-Ali, Paradise Gray, Ernie Paniccioli, and many others. Their wisdom and experiences have amplified the museum’s mission, transforming it into a beacon of education, empowerment, and social change. More than a celebration of the past, this book addresses the urgent challenges facing Black history today, emphasizing the critical need to teach and preserve these stories amidst efforts to erase or distort them. It also looks to the future with the introduction of the Black Seed Legacy Project—an initiative designed to empower communities to create and sustain their own archives, ensuring that the voices of the past continue to inspire future generations. Richly illustrated and deeply reflective, A Legacy in Motion is both a tribute to the enduring power of history and a blueprint for preserving its legacy. From its humble beginnings in a classroom to its recognition on national and international stages, this book is a call to action for all who value truth, justice, and the indomitable spirit of the Black experience.
