Forgotten Stories of the 2nd Great Awakening Vol. 2 - Christian Newcomer's Autobiography & Revival Journal 1795-1830 presents the life of Bishop Christian Newcomer of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. It chronicles thirty-five years of his life as a circuit rider. During the years that he kept this journal, it is estimated that he traveled 150,000 miles on horseback back and forth from his home outside of Hagerstown, Maryland. Beginning in 1777, his many years of ministry took him through Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, New York, and even into Canada. Newcomer's journal entries range from normal day-to-day activities on his farm to powerful and dramatic gospel encounters taking place over multiple decades and locations. These also include his constant interactions with contemporaries and fellow movers and shakers of the time, including Methodist Bishop Francis Asbury. Their occasional commentary concerning Newcomer appears in supplement throughout the book and agrees with what we learn from Newcomer's own thoughts as recorded in his diary. He represented the best of what a servant leader might offer during times of great triumph along with the many challenges which accompanied them. Not merely a reprint of the 1834 publication released four years after his death, this corrected and expanded version (far easier to read than the original printing) also includes maps, biographies, illustrations, and supplemental content gleaned from era sources. These efforts were undertaken so that Bishop Newcomer's life during the 2nd Great Awakening comes alive for those who are hungry for revival and awakening today, as well as those interested in learning about this mostly forgotten yet impactful period in our nation's history.
