Description
“I couldn’t bear to think about it; and yet, somehow, I couldn’t think about nothing else...” Mark Twain's work The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was originally published in the United Kingdom in 1884, Huckleberry Finn serves as the book's narrator. A youth whose unsubtle vernacular speech is wonderfully matched to precise and lyrical descriptions of events, vivid portrayals of characters, and narrative reproductions that are both widely comedic and subtly satirical. Huck flees his violent father and embarks on a lengthy and constantly interrupted raft trip down the Mississippi River with his friend and escaped slave, Jim. Throughout the voyage, Huck meets a wide range of characters, and the novel vividly depicts practically every social class living on or near the river. As a result of these encounters, Huck overcomes his racial biases and comes to appreciate and love Jim. The pages of the novel are peppered with exquisite descriptions of the huge river and the surrounding woodlands, and Huck's good disposition and unconscious humor saturate the whole work. However, one thread that runs across adventure after adventure is that of human cruelty, which manifests itself in both individual crimes and mindless acceptance of institutions such as slavery. Huck's natural kindness is constantly juxtaposed with the repercussions of a corrupt society, making this a must-read for all! Sneak Peek: "It hadn’t ever come home to me before, what this thing was that I was doing. But now it did; and it stayed with me, and scorched me more and more. I tried to make out to myself that I warn’t to blame, because I didn’t run Jim off from his rightful owner; but it warn’t no use, conscience up and says, every time, “But you knowed he was running for his freedom, and you could a paddled ashore and told somebody.” That was so—I couldn’t get around that noway".
