Historical Wyoming Index 1947-2024

In 1947 our first County Historian, Harry S. Douglass, introduced the residents of Wyoming County, NY to a new publication he called Historical Wyoming. The first issue was introduced that September with great success. Originally published as a printing project through Arcade High School, it continued as a free newsletter until July of 1968 when it was discontinued due to school mergers. Mr. Douglass retired in 1974. When John G. Wilson was appointed, his first thought was to restart the publication, but this time as a subscription-based magazine. Since its reboot in July of 1975, every County Historian since has picked up the gauntlet. It is still sold locally and now has a readership from across the United States. The first issues covered cemetery inscriptions, vital statistics, church and school records, diary entries, and anything that documented our population from before New York made it mandatory in 1880 to keep track of vital records. This was a great help to genealogists and history enthusiasts alike. Since then, Historical Wyoming has continued to publish the above, along with military stories, business endeavors, the growth of our towns, and how our county coped with national events like prohibition, the depression, influenza, wars and even UFOs. If you are an avid reader of Historical Wyoming this index will be of great help in your research. The entries are categorized by author and title as well as subject. With John Wilsons words in 1992, “Historical Wyoming continues to tell the stories of the county’s past and of its people. Other changes in personnel may happen, but we sincerely hope that Mr. Douglass’ dream, the concept of a magazine that would record those stories, will be a permanent part of the county’s future.” We sincerely hope the same.
