Course Description: This course focuses on providing reading opportunities and reflective activities that will help students support and refine the skills they are learning in the comprehensive Language Arts courses. Each lesson is designed to serve as a weekly opportunity for a “check-in” on a student’s reading comprehension skills. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to read a text and determine its theme and central idea, determine the meaning of words and phrases used within it, identify key elements of poetry, and analyze the structure of a variety of texts. This course is split into five units, focusing on fiction, literary nonfiction, drama, poetry, and nonfiction. We recommend scheduling this course one day per week for 36 weeks. We recommend scheduling one lesson at the end of each week for students to apply the skills that they are learning in their Language Arts course, but the course structure can be adjusted to fit your needs. In addition to online practice, each passage has corresponding workbook pages that students can use to do some before-reading and after-reading reflection. They can also read the passage before beginning the practice questions or while answering them. This workbook also includes a key with symbols for annotating text, guiding students to read thoughtfully and with purpose. Finally, each lesson includes a QR code that links to an audio recording of the passage for students who may benefit from listening to the text. Looking for more information?
