It is rare that a consistently hereditary and unchanged Jewish surname can be traced through archival records for eight centuries. Malka is one of the very few such old surnames. Malka, an internationally recognized pioneer and expert on Sephardic genealogy summarizes some of his extensive research on the Malka family. The book begins during the tumultuous 13th and 14th centuries in Aragon, Catalonia, and Navarra, where numerous records are found of Malka families in various occupations. The book then continues with the family's time in Morocco, and follows the author's own branch in colonial British East Africa (Sudan), Switzerland, and the United States. It contains brief histories of Jewish life in Spain and Morocco as well as biographies and vignettes of the author's childhood in Africa, medical school in Switzerland, a stint in a US military hospital in Japan during the Vietnam war, and finally life in America. The author, Dr. Jeffrey S. Malka, is an internationally recognized expert in Sephardic Genealogy. In 2012, at the Paris conference of the International Association of Jewish Genealogy Societies Malka was awarded the Societies' prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for his pioneering work on Sephardic genealogy. Dr, Malka is also the author of the book "Sephardic Genealogy: Discovering your Sephardic Ancestors and their World". The first edition was awarded the 2002 "Reference Book of the Year" Award by the Association of Jewish Libraries. It remains the essential book on the subject. Malka has lectured at the Library of Congress, International Association of Jewish Genealogy Societies annual conferences, Washington Jewish Historical Society, Association of Jewish Libraries conference and numerous Jewish Genealogy Societies in the U.S., Canada, Israel, Turkey, and Spain. He is the creator of the well-known and large SephardicGen website and is the primary contributor of JewishGen's Sephardic databases. Prior to retiring in 2000, Dr. Malka was an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Georgetown University and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Inova Fairfax Hospital, a tertiary care teaching hospital in Northern Virginia.
