Alexander Pope (1688 – 1744) was an English poet and satirist of the Augustan period, considered by many to be the foremost English poet of the early 18th century and a master of the heroic couplet. Among his most famous works were The Rape of the Lock, The Dunciad, and An Essay on Criticism. He is also renowned by his translations of Homer.
